Frequently Asked Questions

Want to know more? Read through these common questions for more information about RFK. If you have additional questions, contact us for more information.

  • Where is the camp located?

The camp is for children in foster care and, for the safety of the children who often come from broken homes, we do not publish the camp location.  Our camp is in central North Carolina and has cabins, cafeteria, meeting areas, and facilties for fishing, swimming, and other fun outdoor activities.

  • Is RFK an overnight camp?

Yes. RFK is an overnight camping experience where campers can relax and enjoy the camp from Monday through Friday without interuption.

  • How old do camp staff members need to be in order to serve?

Staff members must be 18 years old.

  • What do Counselors do?

Counselors fulfill one of the most important functions at the camp. Most campers need responsible, caring adults who can serve as positive influences. During the week of camp, each Counselor is assigned two campers who they treat as their own kids. There job is to lovingly care for and have fun with them all week, just like an older brother or sister might do.

  • Do Counselors get special training?

Yes.  All of our counselors and full-time staff  receive 12 hours of training the first year and 8 hours of training every year after that.  The training is designed for staff working with foster children. Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) principles, developed by Karen Purvis at Texas Christian University, are a part of the training provided to Counselors.

  • Are camp staff members paid?

No. All of the individuals who work tirelessly for months to prepare for camp do it for free. We are all volunteers. We serve willingly because we want to bring glory to God and love on the children He so desperately cares about.

  • I'd like to serve at camp but I can't attend all week. Can I still serve?

Our camp runs best with full-time staff members who can commit to serve at the campground 24/7 for the entire week of camp. Before we can take on part-time staff, we must fill our staff with our full-time volunteers. If there are outstanding needs after we have our full-time staff in place, the Director will post various part-time positions. In the past, these positions have included set-up crew, clean-up crew, laundry help, event shifts, and bicycle repair.

  • How much does it cost to sponsor a child to attend camp??

Because we have one counselor for every two children, we have a higher cost than a non-residential camp.  The cost per child is approximately $800, which covers the cost of the camp, food, transportation, activity supplies, camper gifts, and special events.

  • Is my donation tax deductible?

Most financial gifts to RFK are tax deductible. You will receive a donation receipt from North Haven Ministries, Inc., an IRS 501(c )(3) non-profit charitable corporation registered in Raleigh, North Carolina.

  • Can campers who have been adopted attend camp?

Yes! When a child is a first-time camper, he/she must be under the custody of social services. However, if in subsequent years the child gets adopted or returns to the biological family, he/she is still eligible to attend camp as a returning camper.

  • What if my child does not get accepted into camp?

We do have limited spots at camp for campers. If there is an abundance of applications, we will place some children on a waiting list. We will also offer to connect the caregivers to other local RFK chapters in our area.
